The City of Gothenburg has selected NCC for further planning of the Gothenburg Cable Car project
The City of Gothenburg has today, via the Urban Transport Administration, selected NCC Sverige AB, along with NCC’s subcontractor Leitner Ropeways, for further planning of the city cable car, which will run between Järntorget and Wieselgrensplatsen.
NCC was selected as one of two contractors that participated in the public procurement process by submitting a tender. The tender involves participation with the City of Gothenburg Urban Transport Administration on initial investigation, project planning and budgeting for the project. The intent of these efforts is to ensure feasibility of implementation for the project and arrive at an estimated cost that will be used as the basis for a future investment decision by the Municipal Council.
- We need to bring in expertise for this project already now, because this is the first time ever that a city cable car is being constructed in Sweden. Accordingly, we do not ourselves have all of the knowledge and experience required, says Susanne Hultgren, Head of the Investment and Development Department at the City of Gothenburg Urban Transport Administration.
NCC is one of the leading companies in the Nordic region for construction, infrastructure and property development. Leitner Ropeways is NCC’s subcontractor for the cable car project in Gothenburg. It is an Italian (South Tyrol) supplier of ski lifts and cable cars. Examples of some of the cable car projects that Leitner has recently built, and which have a similar design to the one planned for Gothenburg, include Bolzano (a city cable car that is part of the public transport system) in South Tyrol and the cable car system at Stubai Glacier, near Innsbruck in Tyrol, Austria.
The City of Gothenburg Urban Transport Administration has chosen NCC after having evaluated several quality parameters and the contractor fee proposed by NCC in its bid for tender.
The agreement with NCC also includes an option whereby the City of Gothenburg may continue using NCC's services for continued detailed design/planning and construction of the cable car.
The allocation decision that has been announced today may be appealed by the other company that submitted a bid for tender in this public procurement process. To do so, that company must apply for a leave to appeal from the Administrative Court and it must do so within ten days, which means no later than 15 December 2017.
A final construction decision has not yet been made
A final decision on whether to build the cable car (i.e. an investment decision) has not yet been made. The Municipal Council will make such a decision sometime in 2019. If the city cable car is built, plans are for it to be completed in time for Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary celebration in 2021. It is estimated that the cable car will cost SEK 1.1 billion (at the price level of January 2016).
